Damn Yankees

This is the story of a middle-aged baseball fanatic, Joe Boyd (David Whitney) who trades his soul to the Devil aka Mr. Applegate (Matt Hetherington) for a chance to become the brilliant young baseball player, Joe Hardy (David Harris) and lead his favorite team to victory against the New York Yankees.

As the young  Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life (and wife) he’s left behind. With the help of a handy escape clause and a temptress named Lola (Pia Morley), Joe outsmarts Applegate, returns to his former self and leads the Senators to the World Series.

The brilliant Anne Wood plays Joe’s wife Meg and supporting cast members included the extremely talented Mellissa Langton & Wendy Stapleton.

The whole cast was, as  always, superb. Other standouts included Pia Morley (from tap) she just gets better and better. Also David Harris (who has previously won theatrical awards from tappingbetty & tapsister – for Mamma Mia – best understudy Skye; and for Miss Saigon)

Every show performed by the Production Company is worth seeing, and after 10 years they still lead the way.

Gold star once again.

The only song I knew was “Whatever Lola Wants” and I was interested to read in the program that Damn Yankees was written by the same team that wrote The pajama game. (although thinking about it I can see a similarity of style.
